Internet Freedom and Self-Healing Power: Nancy Makin's 530-Pound Weight Loss Miracle
Nancy recalled, “You’re filling your emotions with food... substituting it for reality, and it makes you feel like life is all about food, and food doesn’t last long.” During that time, Nancy only allowed family members to visit her and sent her son to buy her food. Later, Nancy’s sister gave her a computer, and she began to connect with people outside the home. She built a social life on her computer. As Nancy said, “I didn’t want to lose weight at the time; I just wanted to connect with people.” Because her online friends didn’t comment on her appearance. After all, they couldn’t see her. Instead, they really liked and appreciated Nancy because of her kind heart.
Nancy wrote, “On the internet, I can remain anonymous, nobody knows who I am, and it opens up a whole new world.” Most of the time, Nancy only discussed politics, but her friends gave her a sense of self-worth, which made her happier. She said, “I am loved and cared for by strangers whose faces I cannot see; they accept me because of my spirit and soul.” People found Nancy intelligent and humorous, and these friendships helped her connect with her true self. She said, “Nobody knows me online, so I am free there and can speak my mind. They see my intelligence, and I am no longer hiding in my shell.”
Because of the online social interactions she built (12-13 hours a day), Nancy didn't have as much time to think about food. She started eating less, and her weight began to gradually disappear. Nancy didn't weigh herself, she didn't count calories, and she didn't take diet pills. She didn't follow any diet plan; she was just too busy socializing, and at the same time, she also made peace with herself. Nancy said, "I never knew how many pounds I lost because I never cared. That's the key-don't care." This whole process made her realize something important. As Nancy said, "I've heard too many times that if I could lose another 40 or 50 pounds, I would be so much happier. However, in this process, I discovered that the opposite is true."
When she reached 400 pounds, she began venturing outdoors, back into crowds, and engaging with people face-to-face. She built up her confidence, which is crucial for achieving any goal, whether it's weight, career, or anything else. Having lost an astonishing 530 pounds, Nancy was invited to appear on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." She was also invited to numerous other shows, where she shared her story and offered hope and strength to others. Having experienced loneliness and isolation, she is now inspired to connect with people and create new forms of communication, which brings her joy in seeing her transformed beauty.
The Importance of Contact. The pressures of life, coupled with the constant choices we face, gradually cause us to lose communication with ourselves. Our energy levels decline because energy cannot be released through the body and is mostly diverted to the brain. As a result, our sleep is significantly affected. However, physical contact with others allows us to regain mental-physical communication and enhances our ability to draw energy. It's important to know that there is a healing power in human contact. In fact, physical contact can increase the number of white blood cells in the body, which helps strengthen the immune system. Physical contact can also reduce anxiety. It can slow heart rate and lower blood pressure. From an emotional perspective, it can increase endorphin levels in the brain, which can make people feel happy. The more contact you receive, the better it is for you.
